Bridging the Gap in Cancer Detection by Deploying 20 PET/CTs Across Africa
Release time:2024.4.17
To advance precise diagnostics across Africa, Neusoft Medical Systems, in partnership with key business collaborators, launched an initiative to expand nuclear medicine scan services throughout the continent. As part of this endeavor, 20 PET/CT scanners will be deployed to both public and private medical institutions, improving access to advanced diagnostics. Once fully operational, this project will significantly enhance medical care in Africa, offering timely and cost-effective services. Patients will no longer need to travel abroad to access critical diagnostic services.
One of the early success stories from this program is the NeuSight PET/CT installation at AEGLE Cancer Hospital in Mauritius, which has been operational for nearly two years. As the first PET/CT system in the country, it marks a major milestone for oncology care in Mauritius. Prior to this, patients had to seek examinations in distant locations like India or Dubai, which was both costly and time-consuming. AEGLE Cancer Hospital, the first comprehensive cancer center in Mauritius, aims to provide world-class cancer diagnostics, screenings, and treatment in line with international standards.
“The NeuSight PET/CT is the first in Mauritius, and there is no other PET/CT in the nearby islands. Before its installation, all patients from Mauritius had to travel abroad, taking multiple flights for repeat scans, which was a tedious and costly process. Now, patients can receive care without leaving the country,” said Dr. Vineet Kumar Singh, the Principal Health Executive of the hospital. He also mentioned that the NeuSight PET/CT system is user-friendly, and radiologists can quickly learn how to operate it since most of the protocols are already embedded in the system, making it easy to select the correct protocol for different scans. This system has brought advanced medical imaging solutions to patients from Madagascar, Rwanda, East Africa, and other countries across the African continent.
Since its installation, the NeuSight PET/CT has filled a critical gap in cancer detection. Over the past year alone, it has scanned more than 1,000 patients which is a significant achievement considering Mauritius's population of only 1.26 million. The integration of this technology has not only improved patient outcomes but has also provided substantial economic benefits to the hospital. This investment in advanced medical technology demonstrates the hospital's commitment to offering its patients the best possible healthcare services.
